Yersinia pestis (formerly Pasteurella pestis) is a gram-negative, rod-shaped cocobacillus, immobile and without spores. It is an optional anaerobic organism that can infect the human being by way of the flea Xenopsylla cheopis. The bacterium is the cause of the plague disease, which can take one of three forms: lung plague, septicemic plague or bubonic plague.

These three forms were responsible for a number of high mortality epidemics throughout history, including Justinian's Plague and the Black Death, which decimated one-third of the European population between 1347 and 1353, and the "Third Pandemic" in China in late nineteenth century that killed about 10 million people. These pests were probably originated in China and were transmitted to Europe via trade routes. Y. pestis was discovered in 1894 by Alexander Yersin, a Franco-Swiss doctor of the Pasteur Institute, during a plague epidemic in Hong Kong.
